Human Influence in the Tundra

How can humans deliberatively or inadvertently alter the equilibrium in your biome?

Negative: When humans hunt, they can endanger or kill of a species. When humans drill oil, they can contaminate the water, land, and air which kills animals. Overdevelopment of roads in the tundra can bring more people to the area. These people tend to step on plants that lie on the ground, which kill the different organisms. Finally, air pollution can be absorbed into the plants, which make them unhealthy for the animals to eat.

Positive: Not many people build there homes in the tundra. By doing this, they are conserving the different organisms habitats.

Solutions

  • Limit tourism
  • Limit road construction
  • Establish park reserves
  • Switch to alternative energy

What is the value of biodiversity?

As global warming causes the layer of permafrost to melt, the plants and animals become threatened. The permafrost also becomes good land for migratory birds, so not only do the animals in this region need this environment. The different species are becoming extinct because of human impact. These plants and animals provide humans with medicine and food. The plants also take a lot of the greenhouse gases out of the atmosphere. The plants also tend to keep the water pure.  Simply for these reasons, humans value biodiversity.
